TRAIN MEMORIES

The Eye has to Travel

Train memories on record

“If you are a dreamer, come in,
If you are a dreamer, a wisher, a liar,
A hope-er, a pray-er, a magic bean buyer…
If you’re a pretender come sit by my fire
For we have some flax-golden tales to spin.
Come in!”

– Shel Silverstein

It is a privilege to include. It is a privilege to be included. Come on, in.
Many years ago, former Harper’s editor Diane Vreeland had lived a life of adventures and travels. A film dedicated to her was called “the eye has to travel” and we have connected the dots as storytellers do. Our eyes traveled from the windows of trains. Trains prepared us for journeys into the unknown.
Let us then remember together the journeys of the past and the future. Let us hear again the haunting whistles of the train, and conjure the lonesome stations of varied landscapes, the frames from which we saw distant lands, imagined the snow and the desert and learned the impossibilities of the horizon.
Come and let us tell you a story of a little boy who stood on a bridge in a faraway place once upon a time and watched the trains come and go to places he had never been and only dreamed of.
Let us tell you about our journey to the land of golden threads.
Let us partake in your memories. Allow us to tell you about the things we saw from the window.
Let us share our train memories. Let us remember the frames, the chai, the engines and the rhythm.
